Implicit Bias and the "White Savior" Mindset
Limited Capacity filling up

Our early learning communities’ benefit from the diversity of our population regarding race, culture, abilities, gender, language, and social class.  As our country comes to grips with the inequities of "our systems", it is critical to recognize we each make up "the system." For children to find success throughout their lifetime, they must be steeped in environments that recognize and address bias and relinquish a common perspective of "savior", especially to those who are underserved.  In this session, participants will deepen their understanding of one's own implicit bias, and regardless of cultural or race, understand and engage in a discussion regarding "white savior" syndrome. As leaders, participants will explore how one's own experience and lens impacts the policies and practice we often take for granted and that may negatively impact children and their families.

Mitigating the Impact of Childhood Adversity
Limited Capacity seats available

This workshop will utilize interactive polls and discussions of recent research findings to increase awareness of the biases the public, including educators, have about children who are coping with adversity. The presenters, an early childhood education administrator/teacher, and a social justice researcher will share strengths-based strategies and a variety of resources for mitigating the impact of childhood adversity, including highlights of the children’s books they have written, a virtual professional development course co-developed by Peace4Kids (a community-based organization) and an intervention approach created by Peace4Kids. Additionally, presenters will utilize their children’s book focused on coping with grief and loss to provide resources for parents, educators, and ECE professionals. This tool has been successful in supporting children who have experienced trauma firsthand and adjusting to their next normal.

Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Alexa's PLAYC is an inclusion preschool that has strived to teach diversity, equity, and inclusion to our children 18 months - 5 years old.  Through our Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) project this past year, we were able to conduct research using a survey based off Anti-Defamation League's self-assessment to ensure parent engagement and an update to curriculum and teaching methods.  Instead of re-creating the wheel, there are resources that are available to be implemented.  Our session will explore developmental and teaching strategies to teach not only our neuro-typical children but our neuro-diverse children as well.  By instructing staff to first begin their own self-reflection it allows for opportunities for staff, children, and families to learn and grow together to unlearn our own unconscious bias.

Using Shared Instructional Activities to Support Ambitious Math Teaching Across Early Childhood Classrooms
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will describe how leaders and coaches can support collective inquiry into math teaching through a focus on shared instructional activities, such as Counting Collections or What do you notice. These instructional activities are designed to validate and build from children's varied ways of knowing and communicating, supporting educators to view student participation through asset-based lenses. Using shared instructional activities across classrooms provides a structure for collaboration as teachers learn from and with children and their colleagues.

The CA ECE Workforce Registry is an integral piece of the California professional development system for the early childhood workforce.  Using a data justice framework, we will explore how data will increase recognition and professionalism in the early childhood field across California. The presentation is a hands-on session, designed for ECE Administrators who would like to learn more about Administrative Access, utilizing Registry tools and will include participant surveys and activities. Understanding and taking full advantage of having Administrative Access on the CA ECE Registry, can help site administrators access staff qualification data, verify staff employment so staff is able to apply for stipend opportunities, sign staff up for professional development training, post on the Job Board to reach a wide pool of ECE professionals, and maintain a program profile all in one place!

Limited Capacity seats available
